The Philippines women’s national volleyball team received a major boost ahead of the recently concluded 2025 VTV Cup in Vietnam, as Filipino-American star Brooke Van Sickle joined the squad and made her debut for Alas Pilipinas.

Alas Pilipinas enjoyed an impressive VTV Cup campaign, making the semifinals, but failed to progress past the Final Four after losing to the Russian team Korabelka. Petro Gazz Angels superstar Van Sickle expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent the Philippines on the international stage and looks forward to doing so again in the near future.

“We are grateful to be part of the team, surrounded by such wonderful players, and to have the opportunity to play at a high level. It’s super awesome—as a volleyball player, that’s the goal, right? So it was awesome,” Van Sickle said in a media interaction.

“It wasn’t the result we wanted, but I trust the process and I’m really proud of everyone for fighting through it. There’s more volleyball to play, and I’m just really happy to have seen and experienced what I have. I’ve grown from it, and I’m very excited for the future,” she added.

Van Sickle’s addition was a major boost for Alas Pilipinas, considering she has established herself as the best import in Premier Volleyball League (PVL) history—evidenced by her receiving the first-ever Season Most Valuable Player award at the inaugural Pilipinas Live PVL Press Corps Awards Night.

The 27-year-old also shared her biggest takeaways from suiting up for Alas Pilipinas.

“There are a lot of lessons to be learned. Just seeing the different styles of volleyball across countries is really cool. The physicality, the smarts, and the IQ that other teams have—it’s awesome to go up against that. Again, it’s a process for the Philippines. We’re working very hard, taking what we can, and learning from it. I think there’s so much opportunity and potential in our team.

“It’s been a wonderful experience getting to know all the girls, too. Now I have more friends. Getting to know them individually on a personal level is super awesome. Being part of this team truly feels like being part of a family, where everyone supports each other. It’s awesome to step into the practice gym. We’re friends who also push each other competitively,” Van Sickle concluded.

Alas Pilipinas has had a packed calendar in 2025. After back-to-back competitions in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Nations Cup and the VTV Cup, they will now need to refocus for the upcoming Southeast Asian Volleyball League, scheduled from late July to early August.
