Boxing insider reveals reason for fans’ displeasure with Filipino boxer John Casimero

Throughout the years, John Riel Casimero has developed a harsh reputation from Filipino boxing fans due to his antics on and off the ring.

Veteran boxing analyst JM Siasat pinpointed his pre-fight behavior, specifically his weight issues, as the main reason the former champion has been mired in mixed reactions throughout his career.

“Fans didn’t like how he handled his weight issues,” Siasat said. “In Japan, especially, they see it as disrespect when a fighter comes in overweight.”

Casimero failed to make the 122-pound weight limit in his fight against American Saul Sanchez in October of last year, marking the third time in his career that he was unable to make the contracted weight.

The 36-year-old eventually stopped Sanchez in the first round, but has not fought ever since after being slapped with a one-year suspension by the Japan Boxing Commission.

Siasat added that Casimero’s vlogs on his YouTube channel have further exacerbated the public’s perception of him.

“They like to vlog, make fun of things, and sometimes don’t show professionalism,” he said.

Controversy creates attention, however, as Siasat pointed out, the Filipino boxer can still draw crowds whenever he fights.

“He still has diehard supporters who will watch him no matter what. That’s why even if he’s bashed, people will always tune in when Casimero fights,” he said.

Casimero will fight Japanese Kyonosuke Kameda at 128 lbs after his suspension finishes next month.
