Blackwater signs former Magnolia players

Blackwater Bossing has acquired the services of former Magnolia Hotshots players David Murell and Jed Mendoza on Thursday, Sept. 12.

The two were teammates at Magnolia during the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Murell recently played for Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, where he was released after subpar performances. Ginebra head coach intended to use him as a replacement for Jamie Malonzo, Aljon Mariano, and Jeremiah Gray during the Philippine Cup last year, following a lengthy process to sign him from sister team, Magnolia.

He was picked 20th overall in the 2021 Draft by the NLEX Road Warriors, and was placed in the Road Warriors’ 3×3 team before suiting up the squad during the Governors’ Cup that season. The former Slam Dunk champion was then dealt to the Converge FiberXers, where he performed well under his now-current Head Coach Jeffrey Cariaso.

Mendoza. played with Magnolia last conference and averaged 3.67 points on 5.65 minutes per game. He had been the last pick of the same draft as Murrell by the Northport Batang Pier.

The big eventually joined Magnolia following a stint with its 3×3 team, the Purefood TJ Giants.

Blackwater missed the postseason in all of last year, when they placed 11th and 10th in the Commissioners’ and Governors’ cups, respectively. They picked Dalph Panopio with the third overall pick in the Draft, alongside Ximone Sandagon and Jack Cruz-Dumont, among others.

The two will bolster Blackwater’s rebuild and will seek to help the core of Sedrick Barefield, Justin Chua, and BJ Andrade.
