“Black Jesus is for real”: Allen Iverson chooses Michael Jordan over LeBron in GOAT debate

The debate over who stands as the greatest player in NBA history continues to divide fans, with the conversation almost always revolving around two legends: Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls and LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Both superstars have defined eras, shattered records, and inspired generations — making the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) discussion one of basketball’s most passionate debates. But for Naismith Hall of Famer and Philadelphia 76ers icon Allen Iverson, there’s no question who sits atop the mountain.

In a recent interview with Maurice DuBois of CBS News, Iverson made his stance clear.

“When I think about basketball, I think about Michael Jordan. One of my biggest accomplishments was just being on the same floor with him. That was special to me; that was a dream come true,” Iverson said.

For Iverson, Jordan’s impact goes far beyond statistics and accolades — it’s about the inspiration he provided to players worldwide.

“Michael Jordan is everything to me. He gave me the vision,” Iverson shared. “I’m not even going to go over the stats or his accomplishments, because we don’t have enough time to talk about his legacy and what he’s done for the game — what he’s done for the world.”

Channeling a pop culture reference, Iverson added:

“I could never put anyone before Mr. Miyagi. I’m always going to be Daniel-san. Always. He’s always going to be the teacher. They don’t call him Black Jesus for nothing. It’s for real.”

Despite his firm belief that Jordan is the GOAT, Iverson also expressed admiration for LeBron James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, acknowledging his greatness and global influence.

“I love LeBron James. I love everything he’s done for himself and for his family,” Iverson said. “The things he’s done for his family and his friends are remarkable. The things he’s done for the world, the things he’s done for the NBA — it’s all incredible. If you look up the word ‘basketball player’ in the dictionary, it’ll be a picture of LeBron James.”

While Iverson has immense respect for both icons, his admiration for Jordan remains unwavering.

Nicknamed “The Answer,” Iverson carved out a legendary career of his own — earning the 2001 NBA MVP award, the 1997 Rookie of the Year, four scoring titles, three steals crowns, and 11 All-Star selections. Widely regarded as one of the game’s most electrifying scorers and cultural trailblazers, Iverson’s voice adds yet another powerful perspective to basketball’s eternal GOAT debate.
