Bennie Boatwright arrived in the Philippines early Sunday morning to formally begin the long-awaited naturalization process that could pave the way for his inclusion in the Gilas Pilipinas roster for future international competitions.
Gilas head coach Tim Cone and deputy Richard Del Rosario confirmed Boatwright’s arrival from Chinese Taipei, where he is currently under contract with the Taipei Fubon Braves in the P. League+.
Del Rosario said the 6-foot-10 stretch big is set to attend the first Congressional hearing for his naturalization on November 19.
“He’s here until the 20th. Inaasikaso niya lang yung mga documents niya na requirements for the naturalization,” Del Rosario said after Barangay Ginebra’s 102-93 win over Phoenix at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion. “So we’re happy na itutuloy na ulit yung process for his naturalization sa Congress.”
Boatwright has been on the radar of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas since his impressive stint with the San Miguel Beermen, where he helped lead the team to the 2023–24 Commissioner’s Cup title.

His 51-point explosion against Terrafirma and his consistent scoring made him one of the most dominant imports of recent PBA seasons. His ability to stretch the floor, rebound, and defend multiple positions has made him a strong naturalization candidate according to SBP officials, who describe him as a “solid choice” due to his combination of size and modern skill set.
Before coming to the PBA, Boatwright starred at USC, played in the NBA G League with the Memphis Hustle, and had stints in the Chinese Basketball Association with the Shanxi Loongs. His versatility and offensive polish have continued to earn praise overseas, including in the P. League+ where he currently competes for the Braves.
SBP Executive Director Erika Dy previously said that the federation has remained fully committed to completing Boatwright’s naturalization, noting that his profile fits what Gilas needs moving forward. Coach Cone has echoed the same sentiment, highlighting the boost Boatwright could bring to the national team’s frontcourt. Cone even noted that Boatwright carries similarities to Justin Brownlee — “just three or four inches taller.”
Once his naturalization is completed, Boatwright is expected to join an elite pool of naturalized options for Gilas, alongside Brownlee and Ange Kouame.
For now, his arrival in Manila signals that the long-delayed process is finally moving again, giving Gilas Pilipinas another potential weapon in its bid to become more competitive on the world stage.
