Beau Belga focuses on health to extend career in PBA

Veteran Rain or Shine big man Beau Belga has his sights set on improving his health as he journeys through the twilight of his career in the PBA.

The three-time All-Star said the renewed focus on his health comes from wanting to extend his career as he enters his 17th season in the league.

“Syempre, we’re getting up there in age. Kailangan na mag-trim down at mag-ingat. Gusto ko pa kasing maglaro, kaya kailangan healthy,” Belga said.

Belga, nicknamed “Extra Rice,” also revealed that he suffered from recurring vertigo last season, which kept him out for almost six months.

The 43-year-old added that the vertigo he suffered was linked to diabetes and hypoglycemia episodes, but said he has not had an episode for 3 months after a community of Filipinos dealing with the same thing reached out to him.

“Those were the times in my life na talagang umiikot lahat, wala kang balanse. Pero thankful ako na after adjustments, halos 2–3 months na rin na hindi umatake,” he said.

Belga said that the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters’ goal ahead of the league’s 50th season is to get out of their semifinals hump.

Rain or Shine has fallen short in the semifinals for the past four conferences, with the recent three at the hands of the Talk ‘n Text Tropang 5G.

“The goal is to reach the finals. Pero siyempre, step by step. Hindi madali yung four straight semis na ginawa namin. So, kailangan prepared kami kasi lahat din nagpapalakas,” Belga said.

Rain or Shine added veteran scorer Stanley Pringle alongside draftees Christian Manaytay and Deo Cuajao to help their core of Caelang Tiongson, Gabe Norwood, and Adrian Nocum.

Belga urges fans to be patient with the team and assures that time will come when they return to the PBA’s mountaintop

“Thankful ako sa continuous support. Huwag sila ma-frustrate. Mararating din natin yan, darating yung time,” he said.
