The Philippine women’s national volleyball team continued its impressive run in international competitions—specifically the Southeast Asia Volleyball League—by ending the 2025 first leg on a winning note, defeating Indonesia 25-20, 25-20, 16-25, 25-13 at Terminal 21 Korat in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on Sunday, August 3.
The victory meant that Alas Pilipinas secured their third consecutive bronze medal in SEA V. League competitions, banking on rising star Angel Canino to help clinch their fifth bronze since the regional meet was established in 2019.
Canino’s performances in the SEA V. League first leg earned her the 1st Best Outside Spiker award. This marked the young star’s third international individual honor, following previous awards for Best Outside Spiker in both the SEA V. League and the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Nations Cup.
Canino was the only player from the Philippines to receive an individual award. She joined a roster of standout athletes that included Most Valuable Player (MVP) Pimpichaya Kokram of Thailand, 2nd Best Outside Spiker Ajcharaporn Kongyot of Thailand, Best Middle Blockers Thadtao Nuekjang (Thailand) and Tran Thi Bich Thuy (Vietnam), Best Opposite Spiker Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen of Vietnam, Best Setter Pornpun Guedpard of Thailand, and Best Libero Nguyen Khanh Dang of Vietnam.
It was an important win for Alas Pilipinas, who bounced back from consecutive losses to Thailand and Vietnam, managing to retain a podium finish in the four-team tournament.
Alas Pilipinas and Canino will now shift their focus to the second leg of the tournament, scheduled to take place from August 8 to 10 in Vietnam. There is no doubt that head coach Jorge Souza de Brito will aim to lead his team toward that elusive gold medal.
