Premier Volleyball League (PVL) powerhouse Creamline Cool Smashers are enduring a rare slump, continuing their struggles in the ongoing Invitational Conference.
The Cool Smashers have dropped three of their four matches in the tournament, including their latest setback against Japanese guest team Kobe Shinwa University on Tuesday, August 26, at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.
The defeat marked a historic low for the franchise, which will miss the PVL Finals for the second straight conference—a first in Creamline’s decorated history. With three losses already, the team is out of contention for a top-two finish, as both Chery Tiggo and Kobe Shinwa can finish with no more than two defeats.
Despite the tough stretch, Creamline captain Alyssa Valdez remains determined to finish strong, emphasizing that the battle is not yet over.
“Ang hirap pa as of now siguro siyempre medyo negative ‘yung naiisip namin, but definitely it was a good fight. Grabe ‘yung game ng Kobe today din, and I would say ‘yung positive na nakuha namin, at least hindi pa tapos ‘yung laban. May chance pa rin kami, may game pa kami Friday,” Valdez said.
The 32-year-old star expressed optimism that the Cool Smashers’ recent struggles will serve as valuable lessons moving forward.
“It’s just so nice to see everyone giving their all, and that’s the most important thing din naman, and hopefully, ma-mold kami and ma-shape kami ng mga challenges namin this conference and last conference para sa mga future games pa namin,” she added.
While Creamline’s Invitational title defense is over, the team still has a slim chance to preserve its streak of 18 consecutive podium finishes since 2017. To keep that record alive, the Cool Smashers must win their final match of the conference.
“I think ‘yung goal namin as a team right now is to actually get one point at a time sa next game on Friday. We cannot control kung ano circumstances na mangyayari but I think ang maco-control lang namin kung ano ang lalaro namin sa Friday,” Valdez said.
Creamline closes its Invitational Conference campaign against the ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles on Friday, August 29, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
