Alex Eala wraps up 2025 campaign at Macau Masters with loss to Mirra Andreeva

Alex Eala’s 2025 journey came full circle in Macau—not with a ranking-changing result, but with a measuring stick moment against one of the game’s elite. 

The Filipina tennis ace wrapped up her landmark season on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat to World No. 9 Mirra Andreeva in women’s singles action at the Macau Tennis Masters, an exhibition that served as a reflective finale rather than a points chase.

Facing a top-10 opponent to close the year underscored how far Eala has climbed over the past 12 months. Andreeva, who had been under the weather just a day earlier, showed no lingering effects in singles, reasserting her class and composure to deny Eala a late-season statement win.

The weekend, however, told a more layered story than a single scoreline. Eala and Andreeva were initially set for a rare double meeting—women’s singles and mixed doubles—before illness reshaped the schedule. 

Andreeva withdrew from the mixed doubles match on Saturday, prompting a reshuffle that paired Eala with China’s Jerry Shang against Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and China’s Yibing Wu. The new tandem pushed their opponents but ultimately fell short, 7-5, 7–6(1).
