Alex Eala routs Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi, advances to Jingshan Open quarters

Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala continued her sizzling form at the 2025 Jingshan Open, cruising past Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi with a commanding 6-0, 6-3 victory on Thursday in China.

The 20-year-old Eala, the tournament’s top seed and ranked No. 58 in the WTA, was ruthless from the start. 

She stormed through the opening set without dropping a single game, showcasing her sharp groundstrokes and relentless baseline pressure.

Yamaguchi, ranked No. 268 with a career-high of No. 242, tried to mount a fight in the second set, holding serve and extending rallies.

But Eala stayed composed, breaking at crucial moments to seal the win in just over an hour.

The victory marked Eala’s second straight-sets triumph of the tournament after dispatching Belarus’ Aliona Falei in the first round. 

The Rafa Nadal Academy product has yet to surrender a set in the competition, underlining her growing maturity and consistency on tour.

Fresh off her title run at the Guadalajara WTA 125 and a solid campaign at the São Paulo Open, Eala is riding a wave of confidence in her Asian swing. 

With a spot in the semifinals on the line, she next faces veteran Jia-Jing Lu of China.

For Eala, another deep run in the Jingshan Open would not only boost her ranking but also bring her closer to adding another trophy to her rising career.
