Filipino tennis star Alex Eala playing in a WTA 125 tournament at home could be a possibility as the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) are in talks to deliver the tournament to Manila.
A WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open is discussed for January to February of next year after a meeting between PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio and Philta Secretary-General John Rey Tiangco.
Gregorio believes the partnership between the two parties can ignite the development of tennis players in the Philippines, with hopes of putting the country as one of the best in the sport.
“This is more than a tournament. This is about giving our athletes the chance to test themselves against the world’s best, inspiring the next generation, and placing the Philippines firmly on the global tennis map,” Gregorio said.
Plans to allow the public to play in the courts of the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center are also underway to increase accessibility to the sport.
“The greatest champions began their journeys on public courts,” said Gregorio. “By opening access and investing in world-class events, we are giving Filipinos the same chance to dream big and achieve greatness.”

Eala, who is currently competing in the Jingshan Open, will be able to compete if the tournament becomes a reality next year.
Philta also confirmed that the ITF J30, which consists of junior players, will be held in the country later this year.
For Tiangco, bringing international-level experiences to the country can help Filipinos venture to the sport and hopefully carry the Flag into the world.
“From pursuing the hosting of the WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open and ITF J30 to exploring the opening of Rizal Memorial courts to the public and building the Philippine Tennis Center in New Clark City, we are bringing world-class opportunities closer to home,” Tiangco said.
“Tennis transforms lives, and with PSC’s support, we are determined to help Filipinos rise and shine on the world stage,” he added.
WTA 125 tournaments are the second-highest level of women’s tennis and usually consist of two-round qualifiers in a 32-woman field.
