Alex Eala drops six places to No. 75 in the WTA rankings as she prepares for Wimbledon

Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala has emerged as arguably the best young player to come out of Southeast Asia in recent years, with the 20-year-old establishing herself as a rising star to watch.

Eala showcased her talent with a historic run at the recently concluded Miami Open, where she reached the semifinal stage. The Filipina star defeated three Grand Slam winners en route to the semifinals, marking the deepest tournament run by a Filipino tennis player in history. The young tennis prodigy continues to make history, achieving a new milestone in her career by jumping to No. 69 in the latest Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.

However, things have not gone her way in recent international competitions, as she was eliminated in the first round after losing to Colombia’s Emiliana Arango, 0–6, 6–2, 3–6, on Court 6 at Roland Garros in Paris in her French Open debut. Things didn’t improve in her next tournament, where she suffered another first-round exit at the hands of Czech Republic’s Linda Fruhvirtová, 5–7, 7(7)–6(5), 1–6, in the 2025 Lexus Birmingham Open.

The 20-year-old’s poor performance in her two most recent tournaments has seen her drop six spots to No. 75 in the WTA rankings, as updated on Tuesday, June 10. Eala is currently preparing for the upcoming 2025 Wimbledon Championships, the second Grand Slam event of the 2025 calendar year.

Eala automatically qualifies for a main draw slot and does not need to play in the qualifiers, courtesy of her current ranking within the WTA top 100. The Filipina is training hard for Wimbledon, admitting that she still has a lot to improve upon in order to compete against the world’s best players like Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Coco Gauff.

“That’s not to say I don’t have the potential to be there one day, but at the moment, I still have a lot more to work on in my game. It’s a little bit of everything I need to improve on—mentally, technically. You look at a top 10 player, and they have so many matches each year,” Eala said in a media interaction.

Before stepping onto the courts at Wimbledon, Eala will be in action at the Lexus Ilkley Open in the United Kingdom. She is set to face Australia’s Lizette Cabrera in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, June 10.
