The steady rise of Alex Eala on the global stage continued this week as the Filipina star reached a new milestone in the latest Women’s Tennis Association rankings.
Eala climbed three places to a career-high World No. 29, continuing her surge just as the tour moves to the next stop of the prestigious Sunshine Swing at the Miami Open.
The jump in the rankings comes on the heels of a strong campaign at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, where the 20-year-old advanced to the Round of 16 in the WTA 1000 event.
After receiving a first-round bye, Eala battled past Dayana Yastremska in a gritty three-set duel, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, before delivering one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.
The Filipina stunned fourth seed Coco Gauff, racing to a 6-2 opening set before the American retired at 2-0 in the second.
Her run ended in the Round of 16 against 14th seed Linda Noskova, who won 6-2, 6-0, but the deep showing proved enough to push Eala to another career-best ranking.
Indian Wells was only the latest highlight in a stretch of strong results that has defined Eala’s 2026 campaign.
Earlier in the season, she also delivered a statement victory at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, where she upset world No. 7 Jasmine Paolini — another top-10 scalp that added to her growing reputation as a dangerous opponent for the tour’s elite.
The victory over Paolini, combined with her win against Gauff in Indian Wells, marked multiple top-10 upsets this year and played a major role in fueling her steady climb in the rankings.
Now Eala heads to the Miami Open seeded 31st and placed in the lower half of the draw, where an intriguing rematch could await.

Both Eala and world No. 3 Iga Swiatek received first-round byes and will begin their campaigns in the Round of 64. Should both players advance, they would meet in the Round of 32.
The potential matchup carries added intrigue given their history in Miami.
At last year’s tournament, Eala delivered one of the biggest shocks of the event by defeating the five-time Grand Slam champion 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.
That breakthrough run remains one of the defining moments of her young career. Entering the event ranked outside the top 130, she stunned multiple big names — including Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and Swiatek — to reach the semifinals before eventually falling to Jessica Pegula.
With the Miami Open once again serving as a major stage in the WTA calendar, Eala returns to the tournament with far greater expectations and a significantly higher ranking.
Still, the path forward remains challenging, as among the potential opponents deeper in her section are 17th seed Clara Tauson, 2023 French Open finalist Karolina Muchova, world No. 9 Victoria Mboko, and rising Russian star Mirra Andreeva.
But with a career-high ranking, multiple top-10 victories this season, and growing confidence on the sport’s biggest stages, Eala arrives in Miami carrying the momentum of a player whose breakthrough is quickly turning into sustained success.
