Alex Eala bows out of PH Women’s Open after loss to Camila Osorio, sets sights on WTA 500 Abu Dhabi

Alex Eala’s homecoming campaign came to a close under the bright lights of the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center, where the Filipina rising star bowed out of the Philippine Women’s Open quarterfinals on Wednesday night. In front of a packed, vocal crowd that rallied behind her until the final point, Eala fell to Colombia’s Camila Osorio, 6-4, 6-4, in a tightly contested clash that showcased both promise and growing pains.

Seeded second in the tournament, the 20-year-old Eala matched Osorio shot for shot for much of the evening, but small lapses proved costly.

Breaks of serve at crucial moments swung momentum toward the Colombian, who steadied herself whenever the match threatened to tilt the home favorite’s way.

Despite the crowd’s chants of “Let’s go, Alex,” Osorio sealed the contest with a decisive break late in the second set before closing it out with a crosscourt passing shot.

Still, Eala chose to focus on the bigger picture as she addressed the crowd for the final time on center court.

“Sayang, hindi pumasa ngayon sa level pero ang importante nandito ako sa Manila, sa Pilipinas, nandito ang WTA,” she said, drawing another wave of applause from fans who witnessed a landmark week for Philippine tennis.

Osorio, unfazed by the partisan atmosphere, took a moment to salute the energy inside the venue.

“I love the energy. Even though it wasn’t for me, I still love it,” said the former world No. 33, who advanced to a semifinal showdown against Argentina’s Solana Sierra.

For Eala, the loss marked not an ending but a transition. The Filipina trailblazer is set to depart Manila on Saturday as she shifts her focus to her next challenge — a step up in competition at the WTA 500 event in Abu Dhabi, where she continues her push on the global stage.
