Alex Eala bows out of Linz Open after Jelena Ostapenko rally, eyes Stuttgart Main Draw debut

Alex Eala saw her campaign at the WTA 500 Linz Open come to an end after absorbing a 6-4, 7-5 defeat to Jelena Ostapenko in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

The one-hour and 43-minute match saw Ostapenko finally break through against Eala, earning her victory over the Filipina after dropping their first two meetings on the pro tour. It was also their first encounter on clay.

Eala showed early control in the opening set, building a 4-2 advantage before Ostapenko responded with four straight games to steal the set, 6-4.

The Latvian leaned on her aggressive shot-making to dictate play, overpowering Eala in baseline exchanges.

The 20-year-old Filipina appeared on track to extend the match after surging to a 5-1 lead in the second set. However, Ostapenko mounted a strong comeback, capitalizing on Eala’s struggles to finish points and regaining control of the rallies.

Despite tallying double-digit double faults and unforced errors, the 28-year-old Latvian closed out six consecutive games to complete the straight-sets win, 7-5.

“She’s a good player. This year, I’ve been beating players I’ve never beat before which means I’m on the right path,” Ostapenko said after the match.

The loss halts Eala’s run in her first clay-court tournament of the 2026 season and her ninth tournament overall this year.

Ostapenko, a former Grand Slam champion, advances to the quarterfinals where she will face Elena-Gabriela Ruse.

Despite the early exit, Eala quickly shifts focus to her next assignment at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Germany.

Initially slated for the qualifying draw, she was promoted to the main draw following the withdrawal of Zheng Qinwen.

Eala is set to compete in a stacked field featuring top-ranked players including world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, No. 2 Elena Rybakina, No. 3 Coco Gauff, and No. 4 Iga Swiatek.

Eala will look to regroup as she continues her clay-court campaign in Stuttgart next week.
