Alex Eala’s breakout 2026 season continues to reach new heights.
The 20-year-old Filipina is assured of a new career-best ranking in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) standings following her impressive run at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.
After reaching the Round of 16 of the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament, Eala climbed to No. 28 in the WTA live rankings, ensuring she will finish the event inside the Top 30 for the first time in her career once the rankings are officially updated.
Her rise was fueled by two crucial victories against high-quality opposition.
Eala opened her campaign in the Round of 64 with a gritty three-set victory over Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, prevailing 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 in a tightly contested battle to advance to the next round.
The Filipina followed that up with the biggest win of her Indian Wells campaign, stunning world No. 4 Coco Gauff in the Round of 32. Eala dominated the match early, leading 6-2, 2-0 before the American was forced to retire due to a left-arm injury.
The result not only propelled Eala into the fourth round of the tournament but also evened her head-to-head record with Gauff after previously losing to the American in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships just weeks earlier.

If Eala manages to win against her next opponent Linda Noskova, the victory will propel her four spots up to No. 24 in the WTA rankings, setting her up for a possible Top-20 ranking in the upcoming Miami Open.
Indian Wells marks another significant milestone for the young Filipina, who has steadily climbed the rankings in the past year. She previously reached a career-high of No. 31 in February 2026, becoming the highest-ranked Filipina in WTA Tour history.
Now guaranteed a Top-30 finish after the tournament, Eala continues to cement her place among the elite players on the WTA circuit.
Training under coach Joan Bosch at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, the left-handed star has been building momentum with deep runs in major events, including a quarterfinal finish at the Dubai Championships earlier this season.
Her latest surge at Indian Wells not only boosts her ranking but also further strengthens her growing reputation as one of the most exciting young talents on the women’s tour.
With a new career high already secured, Eala now looks to keep the momentum going as she continues her campaign in one of tennis’ biggest tournaments outside the Grand Slams.
