Alex Eala aims to break the ‘Czech curse’ against Karolina Muchova in Miami Open Round of 16 

Momentum has a way of reshaping expectations, and for Alex Eala, the Miami Open is steadily becoming a proving ground where she continues to validate her place among the sport’s rising names. 

The Filipina standout advanced to the fourth round after a composed straight-sets win over Magda Linette, building on the confidence she gained from her breakthrough semifinal run at the same tournament last year.

“Yeah I’m really excited. I haven’t thought about it much, I haven’t had time to think about it much,” she said during her press conference. “She’s obviously a great player and she is doing really well. A couple of years back I watched one of her finals and I was really impressed.”

Eala also acknowledged the significance of the moment, recognizing both the challenge and the privilege of facing a player of Muchova’s caliber. “To be put in a position to compete against her is a real privilege and it will be a test for sure.”

Muchova arrives in the fourth round in strong form, having secured wins over Camila Osorio and Katie Boulter. The Czech star, who also captured the Qatar Open title earlier this season, brings a blend of experience, variety, and composure that has consistently made her a dangerous opponent in deep tournament stages.

Eala’s path to this round also carried its own twist. She was initially set to face world No. 3 Iga Swiatek, but Linette’s upset opened the door for a different route. Eala capitalized fully, turning the unexpected opportunity into a convincing win that kept her campaign on track.
