The young Filipinas of Alas Pilipinas U18 fell just short of a podium finish at the 3rd Asian Youth Games, bowing to regional powerhouse Thailand U18, 26-24, 25-20, 26-24, in the bronze-medal match of the Girls’ Volleyball Division on Wednesday at Isa Sports City in Bahrain.

The Filipinas put up a valiant fight in all three sets, pushing the Thais to their limits with strong serving and scrappy defense. Each frame turned into a tense battle down the stretch, but Thailand’s composure and experience ultimately made the difference in closing out the tight sets.

Before their bronze-medal bid, Alas U18 impressed during the elimination rounds, notching a convincing 25-16, 20-25, 25-16, 25-18 win over Chinese Taipei U18 in the quarterfinals. The victory secured their place among Asia’s top four youth teams and highlighted their potential on the international stage.

However, their semifinal run was halted by an unbeaten Iran U18 side, which handed the Philippines a hard-fought 28-26, 18-25, 19-25, 18-25 defeat.

Iran’s size and consistency proved to be a challenge for the young Filipinas, who still showed grit and flashes of brilliance throughout the four-set duel.

The squad, composed mostly of the National University Nazareth School (NUNS) core, gained invaluable international experience and exposure against Asia’s volleyball elites — a key step toward strengthening the country’s pipeline for future national teams.

While the campaign ended without a medal, the young Alas Pilipinas can hold their heads high, having made their mark with an inspired showing that underscored the bright future of Philippine women’s volleyball.
