Alas Pilipinas continued their rapid rise in international volleyball by stunning the highly favored Kazakhstan team, 25-21, 25-15, 25-19, in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Volleyball Nations Cup on Thursday, June 12, in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The victory secured Alas Pilipinas a spot in the semifinals of the AVC Volleyball Nations Cup for the second straight year, after the Philippines women’s national volleyball team topped Pool B with a 4-1 win-loss record, edging out Kazakhstan by virtue of superior match points.

Three-time UAAP Most Valuable Player (MVP) Bella Belen led from the front, finishing with 16 points off 14 attacks, along with 11 excellent receptions and three digs—showcasing exactly why she is being hailed as the next big superstar in Philippine volleyball. She received strong support from Alyssa Solomon and Angel Canino, who registered 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Alas captain Jia de Guzman expressed pride in her team after the match, praising their grit and determination to bounce back from an earlier loss to Kazakhstan in the tournament.

“After yesterday’s match where we beat New Zealand, Kazakhstan was already in our minds as we left the court for the dugout. We knew the Kazakhs are a tough matchup and we needed to do our best to beat them. It’s unbelievable—a straight-sets win for us. I’m really proud of my teammates. This victory is a big morale booster,” De Guzman said.

Alas Pilipinas will face Chinese Taipei in the semifinals on Friday, June 13, after their opponents finished second in Pool A. If the Philippines win, they will surpass their bronze-medal finish from last year.
