Alas Pilipinas Women swept Indonesia in straight sets, 25-17, 25-17, 28-26, on Sunday to claim the bronze medal in the second and final leg of the 5th SEA Women’s V.League in Ninh Binh, Vietnam.
The win secured the Philippines’ fourth consecutive bronze and sixth overall in the tournament, further fueling hopes that they could finally break the country’s long-standing medal drought in the SEA Games. It also marked the Philippines’ 21st podium finish in international play and their 11th bronze medal.
Powered by standout performances from Eya Laure, Bella Belen, Adamson star Shaina Nitura, and last leg’s Best Outside Hitter Angel Canino, Alas dominated the second set to take full control of the match.
In the third frame, Belen led a 4-2 rally that cut the deficit to just one, 17-18, before Indonesia pulled ahead again, 22-20, off a strong open hit from Mediol Yoku. Laure answered with three straight attacks to tie the score at 23, but a service error gave Indonesia a set point, a confident Belen struck twice in a row — including a left-wing spike — to push Alas to match point at 25-24.
Indonesia fought back to snatch a set point at 26-25, but Belen and Canino combined for the next two points, and an attack error from Salsabila sealed the victory for the Philippines.
The win came despite a scare in the opening set when winger Alyssa Solomon went down with an apparent leg injury and had to be stretchered off the court, with Alas leading 17-11.
With consistent podium finishes and a rapidly improving program, the Philippines is steadily closing the gap on Southeast Asia’s volleyball powerhouses, Vietnam and Thailand — making a SEA Games podium finish look more possible than ever.
