Alas Pilipinas notched their first victory in the 2025 VTV International Women’s Volleyball Cup, bouncing back strongly from an opening-day loss to defeat Chinese club Sichuan Wuliangchun in four sets, 25-12, 25-22, 19-25, 25-15, on Monday at the Vinh Phuc Gymnasium.
The Philippine national team, eager to rebound after a straight-sets defeat to host Vietnam on Sunday, showcased a more cohesive and aggressive performance against the Chinese squad. This win improves Alas Pilipinas’ record to 1-1 in Pool A, tying them with Sichuan Wuliangchun.
Alas Pilipinas came out firing, dominating the first two sets with an impressive offensive and defensive display. The combination of Brooke Van Sickle and MJ Phillips proved potent, delivering crucial attacks and blocks.
Setter Jia De Guzman orchestrated the plays, distributing the ball effectively to her hitters. Dell Palomata also contributed significantly on the defensive end with timely blocks.
While Alas Pilipinas seemed poised for a sweep, Sichuan Wuliangchun found their rhythm in the third set, disrupting the Filipina’s momentum with stellar defense and timely kills, ultimately taking the set 19-25.
However, the Philippine contingent quickly regrouped in the fourth set. Led by the consistent offensive output of Van Sickle and Phillips, along with contributions from Leila Cruz and Vanie Gandler, Alas Pilipinas pulled away early and maintained their lead. Dell Palomata’s kill block sealed the victory, highlighting the team’s resilience and determination.
Brooke Van Sickle, the reigning PVL MVP, was a standout performer, leading the team in scoring. MJ Phillips also continued to impress in her national team debut, forming a formidable attacking duo with Van Sickle. Leila Cruz, a revelation in her first national team appearance, also provided valuable points as the starting opposite hitter.
The win is a crucial confidence booster for Alas Pilipinas as they navigate the VTV Cup. Their next challenge will be against winless Australia on Tuesday, July 1, at 3 p.m., in their final pool play match, where they will aim for back-to-back wins.
