Alas Pilipinas Men climb to No. 77 in World Volleyball rankings after stunning Egypt win

After their thrilling 29-27, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21 upset over Egypt at the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship in Pasay City, Alas Pilipinas vaulted 11 spots in the official FIVB world standings — moving from No. 88 to No. 77.

According to FIVB’s ranking system, the historic victory netted the Philippines 18.14 ranking points, a massive haul that propelled them past several nations in one stroke. Upsets of this scale rarely occur, and when they do, the point swings are significant. 

For context, victories over similarly ranked teams often yield only 2–4 points, while wins against much stronger opponents can push into double digits, as seen in this case.

Egypt, on the other hand, absorbed only a minor setback, dropping just one place from No. 21 to No. 22. The relatively small dip highlights how higher-ranked teams can absorb losses without dramatic consequences, whereas lower-ranked squads stand to benefit tremendously from surprise wins.

The boost is especially meaningful for the Philippines, who entered the tournament as one of the lowest-ranked teams in the field. 

At No. 88, they were considered underdogs with little expectation of making waves on the world stage. 

But by toppling a powerhouse like Egypt, the Nationals not only validated their rapid development under coach Angiolino Frigoni but also gave themselves a realistic chance of climbing even higher.

That chance comes on Thursday, when Alas Pilipinas face another heavyweight in Iran, ranked No. 14 in the world. 

A win would guarantee passage into the Round of 16 while also providing another major surge in ranking points, potentially lifting the Filipinos into the low 70s — an unprecedented standing in their volleyball history.
