Alas Pilipinas is set to challenge host and Southeast Asian powerhouse Vietnam on the opening day of the second leg of the 5th SEA Women’s V.League, scheduled for Friday, August 8, at the Ninh Bình Gymnasium.
Coming off a bronze medal finish in the tournament’s first leg, the Nationals are determined to improve their podium standing and break their losing streak against Vietnam, with the crucial match tipped for 7 p.m.
Led by De La Salle standout Angel Canino—who earned the Best Outside Hitter award in the first leg—Alas Pilipinas is hungry for a victory that will finally overcome Vietnam, a rival they have not defeated since 2019.
Filipino volleyball icon and former Alas Pilipinas member Alyssa Valdez has remarked, “(they) have the same build and sharp kills,” highlighting her similarity with the UAAP Season 86 Finals MVP.
In their last encounter during the first leg, Alas Pilipinas fell to Vietnam in four sets: 25-13, 25-21, 23-25, 25-9.
Veteran players Jia De Guzman, Dawn Cantindig, Maddie Madayag, Dell Palomata, Vanie Gandler, and Eya Laure will also be part of the lineup. Coach Jorge de Brito plans to field a familiar squad against Vietnam, with middle blockers Fifi Sharma, Thea Gagate, Maddie Madayag, and Dell Palomata anchoring the net.
Creamline and former Ateneo setter Jia De Guzman, along with Mars Alba, will direct the Nationals’ offense.
The wing positions will be held by UAAP three-time MVP Bella Belen and National University champion Alyssa Solomon.
Veteran liberos Justine Jazareno and Dawn Cantindig will spearhead the Philippine team’s floor defense.
Following the match against Vietnam, Alas Pilipinas will face regional powerhouse Thailand on the second day, then conclude the second leg with a rematch against Indonesia—the team they defeated to claim bronze in the first leg—on the final day of the tournament running from August 8 to 10.
