AJ Manas delivered a breakthrough performance and captured the Cuetec MVP as Team Asia defended their Reyes Cup title against Team Rest of the World, 11-3, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Sunday.

The 18-year-old electrified his home crowd the whole tournament, ending it in empathic fashion in a doubles match with fellow Filipino and world champion Carlo Biado against world No. 1 Fedor Gorst and Moritz Neuhausen.

With the Asians up 3-1, Manas pulled off a safety that allowed Neuhausen to commit a foul and put the champions to the hill, 4-1.

Manas and Biado ran out the final rack, with the latter potting the final 9-ball to complete the title defense on home soil.

Before Sunday, Asia’s best had a large 9-1 lead, extended by Aloysius Yapp’s 5-1 victory against Jayso Shaw.

However, Team Rest of the World threatened to mount a comeback after Shaw and Skyler Woodward toppled Yapp and Duong Quoc Hoang, 5-2, and Francisco Sanchez Ruiz got the best of Filipino Johann Chua, 3-5.

Captained by Filipino pool legend Francisco “Django” Bustamante, Asia repeats as world champions and has birthed a new star in “Starboy.”
