After 18-month layoff, Kianna Dy helps PLDT end years of heartbreak

For years, both PLDT High Speed Hitters and Kianna Dy knew the sting of heartbreak — the team falling short in crucial moments, and the veteran spiker battling through a grueling recovery from a career-threatening knee injury.

Now, in 2025, both stories have intertwined into triumph, as Dy and PLDT sit atop the PVL with back-to-back championships.

The 30-year-old opposite hitter, who spent 18 months sidelined before finally returning to the court in January, has rediscovered her form and proven herself once more on the big stage.

Dy stepped up in consecutive finals appearances, scoring 13 points in PLDT’s historic PVL On Tour title against Chery Tiggo and then leading the charge with 17 points against Kobe Shinwa University in the Invitational Conference finals.

Her presence and poise in the clutch highlighted just how valuable her comeback has been to PLDT’s resurgence.

PLDT completed the Invitational championship with a 21-25, 31-29, 25-22, 25-18 victory, capping off a dominant campaign that saw them sweep both tournaments — an eight-game run in the On Tour and a five-game sweep in the Invitationals.

Once criticized for relying heavily on the firepower of PVL MVP Savi Davison, the High Speed Hitters now boast a balanced attack, with Dy’s steady scoring and veteran leadership adding the dimension they had long been missing.

“The team has been through so much ‘almosts’ and it just feels so good to finally get two championships,” said Dy, reflecting on PLDT’s breakthrough year.

Her journey back to the spotlight was anything but easy. The long months of rehabilitation tested her patience and resolve, but the payoff is now evident — not only in the silverware but also in the renewed confidence she brings to the court.

“I’m super confident with this team, everyone improved, everyone’s improving, we’re finally complete and yeah tuloy-tuloy lang,” Dy added.

With two championships in hand, PLDT’s hunger for more success only grows stronger. Dy and her teammates know that their next challenge looms in the Reinforced Conference, where imports are expected to raise the competition level even higher. But for the veteran, the mindset remains the same — keep working, keep building, and keep pushing forward.

“Tuloy tuloy lang kami. Next conference is a different conference, may imports na so we have to work hard again for that,” she said.
