ABAP eager to have unbeaten boxer Weljon Mindoro represent Philippines at 2025 SEA Games

Filipino boxing star Weljon Mindoro is widely regarded as one of the country’s most promising prospects — an athlete well on his way to greatness, as shown by his unbeaten professional record.

With the 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) fast approaching, the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) is eager to see Mindoro don the national colors for the first time. The federation has already reached out to his camp to discuss a possible inclusion in Team Philippines for the regional showpiece.

ABAP secretary general Marcus Manalo confirmed during a recent media interaction that the federation intends to coordinate with Mindoro’s managers, Gerry Balmes and Orly Barcelago, to finalize details.

“We will reach out. ABAP din naman naglagay sa kanya Mindoro in the long list,” Manalo said, referring to the list of boxers submitted by ABAP to the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), which in turn forwarded it to the SEA Games organizing committee.

Manalo added that the 25-year-old boxer has already submitted a copy of his passport, a gesture indicating his willingness to represent the country — a first in his career.

At the Philippine Sports Authority (PSA) Forum last week, Mindoro’s managers confirmed that while no formal discussions have taken place yet, they are open to the idea of the southpaw joining the national team.

“Mas maganda kung maging pormal na lang yung pagmi-meeting diyan. Kung mapag-mitingan ng maayos wala namang problema. Hindi namin ipagdadamot si Weljon dahil isang karangalan yun makapagsilbi para sa bayan,” Barcelago said.

Mindoro’s potential inclusion would further strengthen the Philippine boxing contingent, given his perfect record of 15 wins, no losses, and one draw — all victories coming by knockout. Should he agree, he would become the third Filipino professional boxer to represent the national team at the SEA Games, joining Charly Suarez and Eumir Marcial.

POC president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino recently confirmed that Marcial — the Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medalist — was also included in the long list submitted to the SEA Games organizers, though he has yet to confirm his participation.

At the previous SEA Games held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the Philippine boxing team captured four gold medals, courtesy of Carlo Paalam, Nesthy Petecio, Ian Clark Bautista, and Paul Bascon.

Mindoro, meanwhile, recently competed in both the Batang Pinoy and Palarong Pambansa, and is set to return to Japan soon to continue his training.
