Barangay Ginebra San Miguel displayed their never-say-die fighting spirit—known to fans across the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA)—as they mounted a massive 18-point comeback against rivals San Miguel Beermen on Wednesday, June 25, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, winning Game 1 of the Philippine Cup semifinals, 73–71.
Barangay Ginebra struggled for long stretches of the game before making a late surge to victory. While veteran Japeth Aguilar top-scored with 18 points, it was the exceptional performance of star guard Scottie Thompson that drew high praise, as he battled through cramps to help secure the win.
For most of the game, Thompson played through various discomforts, including cramps and a hard fall in the fourth quarter. Despite the adversity, the 31-year-old finished with a near double-double—16 points and eight rebounds—in approximately 33 minutes of action.
The superstar guard admitted during the post-game press conference that nothing is off the table when it comes to playoff intensity.
“We know the playoffs have very tough games, but whatever we can give, we will give our very best. This is part of the game. It’s the playoffs, so the physicality is there. We have to battle through it. We have to be tough in every single possession,” Thompson said.
“From the start of the ballgame, we have to be mindful, especially on the defensive end. I think our defense was the reason we stayed in this game,” he added.
In addition to Aguilar and Thompson, Jamie Malonzo also chipped in with 14 points—an important contribution to Barangay Ginebra’s victory.
Game 2 of the semifinal series between the two teams will take place on Friday, June 27, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
