Eumir Marcial’s SEA Games status uncertain, says ABAP

Filipino boxer and Olympian Eumir Marcial is eyed to represent the Philippines for the upcoming 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games this December but his status is still uncertain, Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) secretary general Marcus Manalo said.

Marcial is set to fight in the Thrilla in Manila 2 undercard at the Smart Araneta Coliseum against Venezuela’s Eddy Colmenares for the World Boxing Council (WBC) International Middleweight Championship.

Manalo said the Olympic bronze-medalist will miss the SEA Games, which is slated from December 9 to 20, If Marcial get booked a fight in December by his promotion, MP Promotions,.

If it fits his schedule, or if he can prioritize then that’s the setup,” Manalo said on Off the Court.

“Although, there’s a bit of uncertainty because after the three-line Manila bouts, it looks like they’re looking at arranging another professional fight for him towards the end of the year. So there’s no finality yet,” he added.

MP Promotions President Sean Gibbons previously highlighted a four-fight swing for Marcial to hopefully fast-track him in the Middleweight world rankings.

Manalo also said that they will continue to support Marcial despite his uncertainty, and expects that the Filipino boxer can still undergo training camp before the SEA Games.

“We should be able to show support as long as there’s no conflict. So far, it looks like we’re going to have a training camp before the Southeast Asian Games,. “So I think we have time to watch Eumir in his pro fight,” Manalo said.

The Philippines will still boast hard-hitters in its quest for gold medals as Two-time Olympic medalist and 2023 SEA Games gold-medalist Nesthy Petecio will try to defend her title alongside Aira Villegas and Carlo Paalam.
