Jonathan Kuminga glad to end 92-day contract standoff with Warriors, eyes another NBA title

After a prolonged 92-day contract standoff, Jonathan Kuminga has officially rejoined the Golden State Warriors, agreeing to a two-year, $48.5 million contract that includes a team option in the second year and a waived no-trade clause.

The deal comes after months of back-and-forth negotiations throughout the offseason. Kuminga had previously turned down a three-year, $75.2 million offer that featured a team option in the final year. Reports indicated that the 22-year-old forward was initially seeking a contract worth $30 million annually with a player option, demands that the Warriors front office ultimately declined.

Kuminga participated in his first team practice on Thursday afternoon and addressed the media afterward, expressing relief that the negotiations had concluded.

“I’m here now. That’s everybody’s goal — to be somewhere for longer,” said Kuminga. “You never know your future. So far that’s my goal. That’s what I want to accomplish — being here for longer.”

“At the end of the day, let’s see where this takes us,” he added. “My focus is on this year — pushing, helping us win. You never know what’s going to happen, but I’m happy, glad to be back.”

The former No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Kuminga has spent his entire professional career with Golden State, including being part of the franchise’s 2022 NBA Championship run as a rookie.

Despite the contract stalemate, sources close to the team suggest Kuminga has maintained a strong working relationship with head coach Steve Kerr and continues to be a central figure in the franchise’s long-term vision.

“It’s a business. At the end of the day, all that matters is we got it done,” Kuminga said. “I’m excited to be here. [I’m focused on] just helping us win — finding a way to contribute on both ends, defense and offense. I want to be a piece that helps us win games and, hopefully, another championship.”

In the 2024-25 season, Kuminga will look to build on a strong campaign last year where he averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, showcasing his growth as both a scorer and two-way presence.

With the contract situation now resolved, the Warriors can move forward with a clearer roster outlook — and Kuminga, once again, will play a key role in their pursuit of another title.
