POC confirms 141-strong Philippine delegation for 2025 Asian Youth Games

Team Philippines is all set to make a strong showing at the 2025 Asian Youth Games (AYG) in Manama, Bahrain, fielding a 141-strong delegation of athletes set to compete from October 22 to 31. This marks the return of the AYG after a 12-year hiatus, with the last edition held in Nanjing, China, in 2013.

Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino confirmed the country’s participation, revealing that the first batch of athletes will depart for Bahrain on October 17, five days before the opening ceremony. The second batch, which includes more athletes, coaches, and officials, will follow on October 20.

Tolentino expressed optimism about the Philippines’ chances in Manama, saying he believes the delegation can surpass the country’s two-gold medal haul from 2013. In Nanjing, Pauline Lopez (taekwondo) and Mia Legaspi (golf) delivered the Philippines’ gold medals.

“We have strong chances at gold medals in combat sports, but we are not discounting production in other fronts,” Tolentino said.

Filipino athletes will compete in 19 out of the 26 sports selected by the Bahrain organizing committee. Jiu-jitsu leads the Philippine roster with 17 athletes, followed by taekwondo (16) and wrestling (13). Other sports where the country will see action include:

  • Volleyball – 12 athletes
  • Muay Thai – 12
  • Badminton – 8
  • Athletics – 8
  • Boxing – 6
  • Cycling – 6
  • Weightlifting – 6
  • Teqball – 6
  • Golf – 6
  • Table Tennis – 6
  • Mixed Martial Arts – 5
  • Kurash – 4
  • Beach Wrestling – 3
  • Aquatics – 3
  • Pencak Silat – 2
  • Triathlon – 2

The second edition of the Asian Youth Games will gather 4,250 athletes from across the continent, along with 900 team and technical officials and 700 coaches. Originally launched in 2009, the AYG was postponed in 2017 and 2021 due to the pandemic, making Bahrain 2025 only the second edition of the youth-centered continental meet.

At the 2013 AYG, host nation China dominated with 71 gold medals out of 231, while Thailand emerged as Southeast Asia’s top performer with 17 golds, followed by Singapore (14) and Vietnam (5).

With a revitalized squad and a broader presence across multiple disciplines, Team Philippines is aiming to make a statement in Manama — not just in combat sports, but across the board.
