AP Bren sweeps ONIC PH to stay alive in MPL PH playoff chase

AP Bren reminded the league of their pedigree on Monday night, pulling off a decisive 2-0 sweep of ONIC Philippines in Week 6 of MPL Philippines Season 16 at the Green Sun Hotel in Makati.

The victory was more than just another notch in the win column. It kept the Hive firmly in the thick of the playoff race, as their 4-6 record now ties them with TNC Pro Team for the last postseason spot.

Head coach Jeffrey “Jeff” Manforte admitted that the team came into this week with no room for error.

“Ngayong week kasi yung pinaka-crucial week namin kumbaga eh. Sinabi ko talaga sa mga players ko, once di kami nakakuha ng puntos this week — since tatlo yung laban namin — consider na natin na out of playoffs tayo,” Jeff said.

AP Bren opened the series with a near-flawless Game 1. James “Jamespangks” Mendoza’s Yi Sun-shin controlled the tempo early, forcing ONIC to play reactively.

The breakthrough came at the 13-minute mark when Jan “Shizou” Valdez’s Ruby caught King “K1NGKONG” Perez’s Lancelot in the middle of a lord dance. That mistake allowed Jan “Lord JM” Marl’s Esmeralda to unleash a crushing Falling Star Moon, setting up a 5-for-1 exchange that effectively ended the contest.

Sticking with the same roster, AP Bren carried their momentum into Game 2. Shizou debuted Obsidia and immediately became a thorn in ONIC’s side, constantly hounding K1NGKONG at neutral objectives. 

Lord JM, this time on Uranus, shut down lanes and absorbed pressure, giving Bren’s damage dealers all the space they needed.

The decisive moment came in the 14th minute when Borris “Brusko” Paro’s Hylos was caught out of position. Bren capitalized instantly, securing the lord and collapsing ONIC’s defenses on the top lane. With towers crumbling, Bren’s minion waves stormed the base to seal the sweep.

For a team long considered one of the league’s standard-bearers, the win was more than just about standings. It was a statement that AP Bren still has the fight and firepower to contend when it matters most.

With their playoff hopes hanging in the balance, the Hive are beginning to look dangerous again—at exactly the right time.
