Philippine Senate honors Padel Pilipinas’ historic 2025 Asia Pacific Padel Cup victory

The Philippine National Padel Team etched its name in the history books with a commanding performance at the 2025 Asia Pacific Padel Cup (APPC), held in the first week of September. Battling through a competitive field of eight nations, Padel Pilipinas emerged as champions, defeating Hong Kong 3-0 in a one-sided final to claim the country’s first-ever APPC title.

Spearheading the charge was Senator Pia Cayetano, a longtime advocate for sports and team leader of Padel Pilipinas. The squad’s dominant run was capped by a standout performance from Filipino tennis legend Johnny Arcilla, who was named Men’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. On the women’s side, Joanna Tao Yee Tan earned top honors as Women’s MVP, further underscoring the team’s across-the-board excellence.

In recognition of this landmark achievement, the Philippine Senate on September 24 passed Proposed Senate Resolution (PSR) No. 120, formally commending the team’s gold-medal finish.

The resolution was led by Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri and supported by Senators Pia Cayetano, Vicente Sotto III, Joel Villanueva, Loren Legarda, Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, and Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa.

The Senate also passed PSR No. 131 and PSR No. 132, honoring Tan and Arcilla for their MVP awards.

“I rise with immense national pride in my heart,” said Senator Cayetano. “To honor the historic achievement of our national padel athletes, to witness their victory, to see our flag raised on the international stage—this is the fulfillment of a dream.”

Senator Bong Go, chair of the Senate Committee on Sports, praised the victory as a reflection of the enduring spirit and growing prowess of Filipino athletes.

“This exceptional performance is more than just a win for the team—it’s a powerful testament to the resilience and excellence of Filipino athletes,” said Go.

The victory at the APPC further cements the Philippines’ rising status in the Southeast Asian sports landscape. With athletes excelling across a growing number of disciplines, the country is steadily emerging as a force to be reckoned with on the international stage.

As Padel gains momentum in the region, Padel Pilipinas’ triumph serves as both a milestone and a launching pad for the sport’s growth in the Philippines—and for the next generation of athletes aiming for greatness.
