Jayson Vayson’s management defends controversial stoppage in world title fight

Filipino boxer Jayson Vayson’s manager defended his corner’s controversial decision to throw in the towel in the seventh round of the Filipino boxer’s quest for the Ring Magazine, World Boxing Association (WBA), and World Boxing Organization (WBO) Minimumweight titles.

Vayson was behind the scorecards and had been knocked down before by Puerto Rican Oscar Collazo, but still looked to be in shape to try and turn the fight around before his corner signaled to referee Thomas Taylor to call a stop to the fight in the 1:41 mark of the seventh frame.

Brico Santig, Vayson’s manager, wrote to Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Chairperson Francisco Rivera on Tuesday to explain why the Filipino boxer’s corner threw in the towel.

Santig shared that Vayson had shown signs of fatigue and damage in the fifth and sixth rounds and asked the corner of the Agusan del Sur fighter’s status, to which they replied that he was fine.

“During the rest period between the fifth and sixth rounds, it was evident that Jayson was experiencing swelling around his eyes and a nosebleed,” Santig said.

“Despite this, Jayson struggled to perform well in the sixth round, unable to execute the combinations as effectively as he had in the fourth round. His balance and defense were deteriorating, and he was taking significant punishment from Collazo’s solid blows,” he added.

The manager revealed that a representative from the California State Athletic Commission became worried about Vayson’s condition and continually advised the corner to stop the fight.

“During the sixth round, the commission rep Mr. Angel assigned to supervise our corner asked twice in worried fashion about Jayson’s condition, and we assured them that he was okay to continue,” he said.

“However, it became increasingly clear that Jayson was not performing at his best, and his safety was at risk. As the seventh round commenced, the commissioners again advised us to stop the fight due to Jayson’s condition,” continued Vantig.

Vintage and head trainer Allan Alegria chose to continue, but eventually heeded the representative’s advice and threw in the towel in the seventh round after noticing that Vayson’s “safety was compromised.”

Vintage also said Vayson’s weight cut from 108lbs to 105lbs contributed to the boxer’s limited performance against Collazo.

“In retrospect, we acknowledge that Jayson’s body recovery was not entirely complete, given the significant weight cut from 108lbs to 105lbs,” he said. “This factor, combined with the intense nature of the fight, contributed to his fatigue and decreased performance.”

For Vayson’s whole management team, his safety was of utmost importance, and the stoppage was only a result of preventing any critical damage to their fighter.

“We do not take risks, we do not take chances with the lives of our beloved boxers. God watches us from heaven and we will have to answer to the Almighty if something awful happens.”
