Polish media have expressed criticism over the low attendance seen in gammes of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championships.
The official account of PlusLiga, Poland’s most famous men’s volleyball league, posted on X, that modest crowds during the tournament can be blamed to Filipinos’ preference to other sports such as basketball and boxing.
“Attendance? Low, but that could have been expected. It’s not about ticket prices, it’s just that volleyball is not the leading sport there. Number one is basketball, followed by boxing and martial arts,” the account wrote in Polish.
The post drew flak online as Filipinos defended the country’s hosting, citing ticket prices as the main reason why attendance has not been up to par for such an international event.
Other Polish journalists also defended the country’s hosting of the event, and even praised the atmosphere of the tournament, saying volleyball events in the country are “more fun” than events held in Poland.
“Just want to mention that it is not all polish media perspective. Majority of us see the tweets from fans here, talked to them as well and did the research before tournament,” Polish journalist Ola Chmielowska said on X. “We do know the ticket prices are to blame, and yet, we still very much enjoy the atmosphere, which is way more fun than in Poland.”
Alas Pilipinas Men pulled large crowds during their games in the group stages until they bounced out of the tournament after their close loss against Iran last Thursday.
FIVB President Fabio Azevedo has given the country a “perfect score” for its first-ever hosting of the global volleyball showpiece, with the Round of 16 currently underway at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
