‘Sugar’ Shane Gentallan captures IBF Asia Junior Flyweight title

Filipino boxer Shane Gentallan grabbed the biggest win so far in his career after toppling Arvin John Sampaga to be crowned the new International Boxing Federation (IBF) Asia Junior Flyweight Champion on Saturday, Sept. 20, in Bohol.

The Cebuano dominated Sampagan from start to finish to grab the unanimous decision victory, with the judges giving the bout 97-93 across all scorecards.

After tasting defeat for the first time in his hometown against China’s DianXing Zhu in 2023, Gentallan admitted that he lost confidence, but grabbing the regional title can help him get back on track.

“This is a big win for me. I fought a very tough opponent. He hits hard, that’s why I was very careful with my attack,” he said. “I am getting my confidence back,”

With the win marking Gentallan’s sixth straight since the loss, the newly-crowned champion now believes he is ready for bigger and tougher fights.

“I still have a lot to improve, but I think I’m ready for bigger fights,” he said.

Gentallan’s manager, Floriezyl Podot, also believes his fighter is ready for the big stage and hopes to set up a foreign boxer for his title defense.

“We will bring in a foreign opponent for his title defense. That’s part of our system. Pitting our boxers against foreign opponents to really test them,” said Podot.

Gentallan improved his record to 13 wins and a single loss, including seven knockouts.
