Japan may not have gone deep into the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship, but Ryujin Nippon still walked away with something priceless in Manila — the unwavering support of Filipino fans who made them feel right at home.
Against Libya on Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum, it felt as though Japan was playing in Tokyo rather than Quezon City. The cheers, chants, and waving flags powered the Japanese squad to a commanding 25-20, 25-17, 25-12 sweep in their farewell match.
“I’m so happy and excited to play in front of them. I said it before, they give us a lot of energy and power inside [the court],” said Ran Takahashi, who tallied 11 points.
Captain Yuki Ishikawa, who also chipped in 12 markers, echoed his teammate’s gratitude: “Every match, they are cheering us so we’re happy to be here and play. We’re so happy.”

Even with Japan already eliminated, the Big Dome reverberated with chants of “Nippon!” and “Ta-ka-ha-shi!” as if the team were fighting for a knockout berth. Outside the court, the frenzy was just as intense — fans flooded the Coliseum’s Fan Zone for photos and handshakes, while security scrambled to maintain order.
Kento Miyaura, in particular, felt the love most deeply. Visibly emotional after Japan’s earlier loss to Canada, he later received an outpouring of online support from Filipino netizens. Fittingly, when he exploded for 15 points against Libya, he made sure to acknowledge the crowd.
“Even after losing a match, they tried to push us so they’re so kind,” Miyaura said with a smile. “Every single game, they’re amazing. I want to thank them for making that atmosphere.”
Long after the final whistle, the affection didn’t wane. Fans waited by the exits for a chance to bid Ryujin Nippon goodbye with selfies and waves, proof of the bond forged during their stay.
Japan may not have lifted a championship trophy in Manila, but they left with something lasting: the hearts of Filipino fans who made the World Championship feel like a home game.
