UAAP rebrands ‘Mythical Five’ to ‘Elite Team’

The UAAP announced a rebranding of its post-season award, changing the name of the “Mythical Team” awards to “Elite Team.”

UAAP Executive Director Atty. Rene Saguisag Jr. shared that the name change, which will apply in Season 88, seeks to highlight excellence across all sports in the UAAP.

“Beginning this year, what used to be the Mythical Team or ‘All-UAAP Team’ in each sport will now be called the Elite Team,” he said.

“We took inspiration from international bodies like FIBA’s All-Star Five or the FIVB’s Dream Team. The word ‘Elite’ reflects how these players represent the cream of the crop across all amateur sports,” added Saguisag Jr.

Despite the name change, the rules for selections will still be applied as in basketball, the top five players in statistical points will still be selected, and in volleyball, the best players in each position will still be hailed.

The selections are also the same in softball, baseball, and football, as the best players on offense and defense will still be recognized.

Disciplines such as athletics, chess, swimming, taekwondo, judo, and fencing will select players for the elite team via the gold-medal winners.

The rebranding also comes after the league announced it will allow two Foreign Student-Athletes per team in basketball.

Season 88 will kickstart with the opening ceremonies on Sept. 19 at the host University of Santo Tomas’ campus.
