Contract Standoff: Jonathan Kuminga declines $75.2 million deal as talks with Warriors drag on

The long standoff between forward Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors does not seem to be ending anytime soon, as negotiations between the restricted free agent’s camp and team management continue.

According to NBA insiders Shams Charania and Anthony Slater of ESPN, the Warriors recently upgraded their offer to Kuminga, with general manager Mike Dunleavy proposing a three-year deal worth $75.2 million, including a team option in the third season. As it stands, $48.3 million is guaranteed over the first two years—essentially the same salary Josh Giddey will receive after re-signing with the Chicago Bulls on a four-year, $100 million contract. Notably, the only offer the Warriors have made without a team option is a three-year, $54 million deal.

However, Kuminga’s camp is demanding closer to $30 million annually to agree to a team-option contract and is reportedly willing to go as low as $20 million annually if a player option is included in the final year. Warriors management has rejected those demands, as well as sign-and-trade proposals from the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns—reportedly turning down Sacramento’s offer of a first-round pick and Malik Monk.

Kuminga is also considering signing a one-year qualifying offer worth $7.8 million, which would grant him a no-trade clause and allow him to play out a career year before entering the loaded 2026 free agency class expected to feature LeBron James and Kevin Durant. His agent also requested a one-year deal worth just over $8 million, but the Warriors declined, unwilling to risk losing him for nothing.

Selected seventh overall by Golden State in the 2021 NBA Draft, Kuminga has spent his entire NBA career with the franchise and won a championship as a rookie in 2022. Last season, he averaged 15.3 points, 2.2 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game. Despite the contract impasse, he reportedly maintains a strong relationship with head coach Steve Kerr and remains in the Warriors’ long-term plans.
