Kevin Quiambao unsure for Gilas in SEA Games

Former De la Salle University Green Archer and UAAP MVP Kevin Quiambao might not be able to suit up for Gilas Pilipinas in the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games this December.

Despite his willingness to play for Gilas, his Korean Basketball League (KBL) team, the Goyang Sono Skygunners, is not considering releasing him anytime soon.

Gilas assistant coach Norman Black said there are replacements if Quiambao is not available, as Bobby Ray Parks and Matthew Wright have been in talks with the Osaka Evessa and Kawasaki Brave Thunders, respectively, in the Japan B.League.

If released, neither player can join Gilas’ team practices in Manila due to the B.League’s schedule. However, plans are being made to have enough time to practice before the SEA Games.

The two will have roster spots if Quiambao, who played for Gilas in the FIBA Asia Cup last month and averaged 12 points, 2.2 assists, and 1.6 rebounds, will have to negotiate a release from the Skygunners.

Meanwhile, Parks and Wright have histories with Gilas in the SEA Games stage. Parks has won three gold medals in 2011, 2013, and 2017, while Wright is seeking his second title after winning it in 2019.
