FIVB cuts ticket prices to World Championships amidst fan backlash

After fan backlash, the FIVB has made tickets for the World Volleyball Championship in Manila more affordable.

Tickets, which were priced from P1,500 to almost P14,000, will now be discounted by 30% as a gift to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who celebrated his 68th birthday on Saturday, and the Filipino fans, according to Philippine National Volleyball Federation president Ramon Suzara.

“To give back to Filipino volleyball fans and on the same day that our President celebrated his birthday, it’s but fitting that the LOC and the national volleyball federation offer this gift to the most important stakeholders of the sport—the President and the fans,” Suzara said.

“The president showed that he wants Filipinos to enjoy a world-class event, and we are fully supporting that mission,” added Suzara.

The President graced the opening ceremony of the 32-team competition last Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena, when Alas Pilipinas Men kicked off the tournament against Tunisia. Alas would eventually lose in straight sets, but the ticket prices became the headlines online.

“(The) FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in the Philippines is such a joke. They are milking the popularity of more well known teams such as JPN by having a MORE expensive ticket prices on their game dates-so bad that many would just watch on tv,” one user commented on X.

After the discount, afternoon session tickets will now cost P350 for general admission, P1,208 for upper box back, P1,410 for upper box side, P2,415 for upper box center and lower box back, P2,617 for lower box side, P4,830 for lower box center and patron back, P6,038 for patron center, and P9,660 for courtside viewing.

Alas will seek their first win against Egypt at the Mall of Asia Arena on Tuesday, September 16, at 5:30 p.m.
