The Philippines’ journey in the 2025 World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, England came to an end after Jay Bryan Baricuatro’s split decision loss to Spain’s Martin Molina on Wednesday.

 

Baricuatro gave his best to keep the country’s hopes alive and pushed the Spaniard to his limits, but lost on the scorecards, 3-2, to end his run in the last 16 of the men’s 50-kg division.

 

The Filipino stopped Saudi Arabia’s Pagad Alnaimi in the second round in his previous fight of the tournament before bowing down to the Spaniard.

His teammate Riza Pasuit also faltered, 5-0, against her Rebeca Santos of Brazil in the Round of 16 of the women’s 60-kg class.

 

Olympic silver-medalist Carlo Paalam in the men’s 55-kg category also bowed out of the tournament alongside Ronald Chavez (men’s 50-kg), Junmilaro Ogayre (men’s-60-kg).

 

Meanwhile, Australian Lekeisha Pergoliti became the first bozer to secure a medal after toppling Irish Lisa Edel in the women’s 70-kg division alongside England’s Chantelle Reid.

 

Erislandy Alvarez of Cuba and Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Ummataliev in the men’s 65-kg and 80-kg classes, respectively, advanced to the quarterfinals.
