Philippine tennis sensation Alex Eala continued her impressive form on the court by opening her São Paulo Open WTA 250 event with a 6-0, 6-2 demolition of France’s Yasmine Mansouri in the round of 32 on early Wednesday morning, September 10 (Philippine Standard Time).

Now ranked No. 61 in the world, Eala, who entered the WTA tournament as the third seed, needed just one hour and 10 minutes to cruise past a struggling Mansouri and book her place in the round of 16.

The 20-year-old displayed her talent from the first game, saving multiple break points thanks to some impressive baseline hitting. She closed out the opening set 6-0 in just 32 minutes. While Mansouri put up more of a fight in the second set, Eala’s consistency and power proved too much in the end.

The young star revealed after her win that she was excited to play in the continent of South America for the first time.

“This is my first time in Brazil and my first time in South America, actually, so I’m so happy to see such a lively crowd. I didn’t expect so many people to come out and watch me play. I guess I was a bit lucky to be sandwiched in between two great Brazilians, so I’m just happy to be here and to be able to play well,” Eala said.

Notably, the São Paulo Open returned to the WTA 250 calendar after an absence of 25 years. Currently, the tournament is part of the WTA Tour and stands a level higher than the WTA 125 tournament in Mexico, which was the stage for Eala’s maiden WTA title win.

The Filipina superstar will face Julia Riera, who is ranked world No. 188, in the round of 16 on Thursday, September 11 (Philippine Standard Time).
