Jackie Buntan fails to make history after decision loss to Hemetsberger

Filipino-American Jackie Buntan fell short on her quest to be a two-sport world champion after faltering against Stella Hemetsberger via decision at ONE Fight Night 35 on Saturday at the Lumpinee Stadium in Thailand.

Buntan had an explosive start after touching up Hemetsberger’s nose in the first round. However, the Austrian regained the momentum and knocked down the reigning ONE Strawweight Kickboxing champion on two occasions with the same check hook.

The Filipina showed her resiliency and took back control in the second and third rounds with pressure and lethal striking that quickly showed in Hemetsberger’s face.

Now bloodied, Hemetsberger answered in the championship rounds with distant strikes and effective ring control that allowed her to win most exchanges, eventually securing the judges’ scorecards and the ONE Strawweight Muay Thai World Championship.

The judges scored 47-46 for Hemetsberger across the board as the win marked Austria’s first world championship.

Buntan fell to a 7-2 record, while Hemetsberger climbed up to nine wins and only one loss.

Meanwhile, on the undercard, Shadow Singha Mawynn knocked out Bampara Kouyate with a backfist for his sixth-straight win, and Akbar Abdullaev stopped Ibragim Dauev in the third round.

Rambolek Chor Ajalaboon stayed true to his promise of an early stoppage after toppling Dmitrii Kovtun via TKO in the second round, while Adrian Lee’s debut was foiled by Tye Ruotolo via rear-naked choke in round two.
