Geo Chiu relishes chance to test himself against PBA’s elite big men

Former Ateneo Blue Eagle and Gilas Youth standout Geo Chiu is embracing the opportunity to match up against the toughest frontcourt players in the Philippine Basketball Association, including multiple-time MVP June Mar Fajardo and Japeth Aguilar.

At just 24 years old, the 6-foot-10 Chiu knows expectations are inevitable as he takes the leap to the pros. But for now, he prefers to take things in stride rather than burden himself with pressure.

“Hindi mawawala ‘yun eh,” Chiu told reporters during the opening day of the Draft Combine at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig. “It’s always there.

“But for me naman, like what my parents always tell me, just enjoy it, parang no pressure naman. Like if I add pressure to myself, then it’s not gonna turn out really well,” he added.

“We’re just enjoying the process, enjoying the journey.”

Chiu’s entry into the PBA Season 50 Draft came after much thought, only finalizing his decision at the last minute. Following a brief stint in Japan’s B.League second division and a run with Abra in the MPBL, he ultimately chose the PBA to stay closer to home.

Another projected top prospect Geo Chiu is at the PBA Draft Combine, but he skipped the individual tests.

“Entering the PBA, it’s a dream of mine. Looking back, it’s something that I want to fulfill. Sakto rin ang opportunity and I want to be close with my family. It’s something na medyo mahirap kasi when you are away from your family,” he said.

For Chiu, competing against players of Fajardo and Aguilar’s caliber is both a challenge and a privilege—one he sees as an important step in his growth.

“We know naman na this position is kinda tough. You’re playing against imports, and you’re playing with the best players sa PBA. ‘Yung mga makakalaban mo roon they’re a lot smarter, mas veteran, mas physical,” he noted.

“But we’re just trying to learn. Something to look forward to is playing against yung mga names out there that are really good.”
