Filipino pole vault icon EJ Obiena is set to compete in the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September.

Obiena announced on Tuesday on Facebook and Instagram his final plans for the season in a busy September, which he called the “last swing.”

The busy September will kickstart with the World Athletics Continental Tour in Beijing, China, followed by the World Athletics Championships, and capped off with his home tournament, the Atletang Ayala World Pole Vault Challenge, to be held at the Ayala Triangle in Makati and hosted by himself alongside Ayala Corp. and MVP Sports Foundation (MVPSF)

The world No. 4 qualified for the event last year and will be joined by the likes of defending champion and world No. 1 Armand Duplantis, fellow Olympians Emmanouil Karalis, Christopher Nilsen, and Sam Kendrick.

Obiena last finished with a silver medal in the latest iteration of the biannual tourney back in 2023 in Budapest after soaring over his personal best of 6.00 meters.

Obiena has failed to jump over the 6-inch bar this year, with his recent performance at the Meeting Madrid last July peaking at 5.80 meters for a silver medal.

The World Athletics Championships will take place at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan, from Sept. 13 to 21.
