UAAP set to expand roster sizes, allow 2 FSAs per team

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) is set to expand basketball roster sizes, allowing teams to have two foreign student-athletes (FSAs) on their team, according to SPIN.ph

The rule change will allow teams to have 17 — from 16 — players in their season rosters. However, only one FSA will be allowed to suit up per game.

The expansion grants teams flexibility with their rosters if an FSA becomes unavailable.

Such was the case last year for the NU Bulldogs when Mo Diassana suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first game of the season.

Teams such as the UP Fighting Maroons, De la Salle Green Archers, FEU Tamaraws, and Adamson Soaring Falcons have multiple FSAs in their player pools.

While the UST Growling Tigers, who saw their FSA in Season 87 Mo Tounkara depart the team in the offseason after turning professional in the Basketball Africa League (BAL), have five FSAs on their pool after capturing the services of former boys’ division MVP and Best FSA Collins Akowe, alongside Racine Kane, Christian Tabeth, Joseph Kumbai, and Precious Offoma.

The rule change is set to be enforced for Season 89.

Season 88 will kick off on Sept. 20 as the DLSU Green Archers take on the Adamson Soaring Falcons.
