Terrence Romeo set to hit free agency after Dyip contract ends

Former three-time PBA scoring champion Terrence Romeo is set to become an unrestricted free agent following the expiration of his contract with Terrafirma Dyip.

The move opens the door for Romeo to sign with any PBA team of his choosing, as reports indicate Terrafirma has not offered an extension and appears to be moving forward into Season 50 without him in the lineup.

Romeo’s two-year deal with San Miguel was inherited by Terrafirma in 2023, following a trade that sent him and Vic Manuel to Dyip in exchange for Juami Tiongson and Andreas Cahilig.

While Romeo admitted that leaving San Miguel was one of the toughest moments of his career, he handled the transition professionally and suited up for the Dyip in the last two conferences.

However, his stint was derailed by injuries — including a calf issue in the Commissioner’s Cup and a back injury in the Philippine Cup — limiting him to fewer than 10 games in a Terrafirma uniform.

Despite the setbacks, Romeo remains one of the league’s most electrifying scorers and ball-handlers.

Drafted in the first round in 2013 and acquired by GlobalPort (now NorthPort) in a trade with Barako Bull, he quickly made his mark as the league’s scoring king from 2015 to 2017.

His partnership with Stanley Pringle gave GlobalPort one of the league’s most dynamic backcourts, though it never translated to a finals appearance.

A brief but rocky stint with TNT followed, before he was shipped to San Miguel in exchange for Brian Heruela and David Semerad.

It was with the Beermen where Romeo finally found championship success, winning three titles, including the 2023-24 Commissioner’s Cup alongside import Bennie Boatwright.

Now a seven-time All-Star and still only 33, Romeo’s next move could once again reshape the landscape of the league — with several teams likely to show interest in the high-scoring guard once free agency opens.
