Rain or Shine looks to strike gold again with second-round picks in PBA Draft

Rain or Shine has built a reputation for finding value beyond the first round of the PBA Draft, and the Elasto Painters will once again bank on that formula when they make three selections in the second round of the Season 50 Rookie Draft on September 7.

The team holds the No. 24 pick—once considered a long shot for impactful talent—but history has shown that Rain or Shine has a knack for turning late picks into reliable contributors.

In 2023, the Elasto Painters drafted Adrian Nocum with the 24th overall selection, and the former Mapúa standout quickly proved himself a steal. 

Nocum impressed with his size and versatility at the guard spot, earning praise from head coach Yeng Guiao early in his rookie season.

 He later had a breakout 28-point performance against Converge in the quarterfinals, capped by a fourth-quarter explosion that forced a do-or-die game. By mid-2025, Rain or Shine rewarded him with a three-year deal following an All-Rookie Team selection.

The Elasto Painters also struck gold with Jhonard Clarito, their 17th overall pick in 2022. After a quiet start, Clarito emerged as one of the league’s most improved players, averaging double figures in scoring while providing grit and rebounding. His efforts were recognized with the PBA Most Improved Player award in the league’s 48th season.

Meanwhile, Anton Asistio, selected 22nd overall in 2020, has carved out a steady role with his defense and shooting, giving Guiao a dependable guard off the bench.

With that track record, Rain or Shine believes the second round can continue to be a source of hidden gems. The team is expected to explore prospects who fit its culture of hard work and adaptability, qualities that have helped second-rounders flourish into key rotation players.

“The second round has always been an opportunity for us,” Guiao has emphasized in past drafts. “It’s about finding players who can grow within our system.”

As the Elasto Painters prepare to restock their roster, fans will be watching closely to see if the franchise can once again transform unheralded draftees into the next big contributors.
