Full circle moment: Kim Kianna Dy lifts first PVL trophy with PLDT

Filipino volleyball star Kim Kianna Dy finally won her first-ever Premier Volleyball League (PVL) championship crown after the PLDT High Speed Hitters defeated the Chery Tiggo Crossovers, 25-17, 25-17, 19-25, 24-26, 15-8, in front of 11,055 fans at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday, August 17.

What made the victory even more special for Dy was that she had been sidelined for approximately 559 days due to a knee injury sustained in July 2023. She suffered the injury while playing for the now-defunct F2 Logistics Cargo Movers against the Creamline Cool Smashers in the 2023 PVL Invitational Conference semifinals.

“I have been waiting for this for more than a year now, and I’m happy that I stayed patient. It wasn’t really easy—literally blood, sweat, and tears—and finally, this is our championship moment,” Kianna Dy said in the post-match press conference.

Widely considered one of the best spikers in the country, Dy admitted that winning the title with her former La Salle and F2 teammates was a full-circle moment for her.

“Coming to PLDT was easy because I was with them—Majoy, Kim, and Mika Reyes. And not just because of them, but also because the whole PLDT team was very welcoming and very patient with us coming into their team. Being with Majoy and Ate Kim made it easier because I’ve been teammates with them ever since college, so it’s such a great feeling to win a championship with them again,” she added.

The 30-year-old and the rest of the PLDT squad have no time to rest, as they now aim to continue their strong form in the PVL Invitational Conference, which starts on Thursday, August 21, at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

“It’s a new conference and two new teams, so we’re just gonna work hard in training and bring what we got here—bring the confidence to the Invitationals,” Dy concluded.

The High Speed Hitters will face Chery Tiggo in a rematch of the PVL On Tour finals in the opening game of the Invitational Conference on Thursday, August 21, at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
