Chezka Centeno settles for 10-Ball silver at 2025 World Games

Filipino 10-ball sensation Chezka Centeno fell just short of the top prize at the 2025 World Games, settling for the silver medal after a narrow 6-7 loss to China’s Han Yu on Wednesday. Han capitalized on a costly error late in the match, snatching victory from Centeno’s grasp in a tense finish.

The podium finish marks the Philippines’ third medal in the ongoing World Games, which run until August 17. Jiujitsu star Jenna Kaila Napolis earlier claimed silver, while Carlos Baylon Jr. secured bronze in wushu.

Olympic boxer Hergie Bacyadan, meanwhile, will fight for bronze after bowing to Portugal’s Catarina Dias in the women’s K1 -70kg kickboxing semifinals.

Centeno’s path to the final was a display of grit and precision. In the championship match, she battled back from early deficits of 0-3, 3-4, and 4-5 before surging ahead at 6-5.However, a rare lapse in focus allowed Han to seize the momentum and complete her comeback to claim gold.

For Han, the victory was sweet revenge after losing to the 26-year-old Centeno in the finals of the World 10-Ball Championship in Klagenfurt, Austria, two years ago.

The loss also kept Centeno from joining the elite ranks of Filipino athletes who have struck gold at the World Games. Only two have achieved the feat: billiards great Carlo Biado, who won in Wroclaw, Poland in 2017, and karateka Junna Tsukii, who captured gold in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2022.

Despite falling short this time, Centeno’s performance reinforced her status as one of the sport’s brightest stars and a consistent medal contender for the Philippines on the global stage.

 She is a former champion of the 2023 WPA Women’s World 10-Ball Championship and currently boasts six SEA Games medals—four gold and two silver.
